( NYSE: TM ) is the world’s largest-selling and profitable automaker. It’s a situation to be in. But even Toyota has and here’s one: The Camry is market share.

The midsize Camry has been America’s car for years. But over the last it has lost ground: The Camry is a good car, but rivals gotten a  lot  better, and been stealing sales Toyota’s mainstay. One of those key is  Ford ‘s  ( NYSE: F ) which has grabbed sales its stylish good looks and list of premium features.

Toyota has said that it defend the Camry’s top-dog but it hasn’t yet said exactly it has in mind. But we do know this: The plans to show off a revised at this week’s New York Auto Show.

Fool John Rosevear will be when it’s unveiled. As he in this video, there are reasons to think Toyota be aiming its overhauled Camry at Ford’s handsome Fusion.

A of the video is below.

John Rosevear:  Hey it’s John Rosevear, auto analyst for Fool.com. The New International Auto Show this coming week, days are Wednesday and Thursday, and expecting the automakers to unveil interesting new models. I’ll be with my Foolish colleague Rex we’ll bring you a video of the show’s highlights at the end of each and we’ll have a bunch of in-depth reports for you over the week or so after that.

One of the we’re expecting to be a highlight of the — in fact it’s the first press conference on the — is an overhauled version of the Camry.

Now, this isn’t an Camry, it’s what is called in the industry a mid-cycle For most automakers, with models, that means a grille and new taillights and maybe tweaks to the interior or the suspension or changes intended to make the model a little fresher and its sales strong for a little but not a whole new model.

But Toyota has hinting that they something much more in store for the Camry. They seem to be feeling the need to do significant, because the Camry has under a lot of pressure over the year or so. The Camry has been best-selling car for a long while, but it has been losing market and that’s not because the current is bad, it’s because the is a whole lot better than it to be.

The Honda   ( NYSE: HMC ) Accord has been a very polished it has always been the Camry’s rival. That’s all still but now there’s the Nissan   ( NASDAQOTH: ) Altima hitting the Camry on price from one side, and the Fusion hitting it on the other as a more stylish and somewhat premium alternative. Now, certainly has the muscle to win a price war if it wants to do that, but it might be a different approach.

There has some speculation that the will get a more dramatic than we usually expect a mid-cycle refresh, I’ve a couple of photos of a concept car Toyota showed in Detroit in called the NS4, it’s a hybrid sedan, and as you can see, got much more dramatic than the current Camry It’s possible that will do something like with the Camry to try to fend off the

Or, it’s possible that some other significant new coming, a new hybrid drivetrain or But clearly, from what has said, and from the fact they grabbed the very press conference slot at the in order to say it, this is going to be a big And since this is America’s car, it should be big news, and have it all for you when it happens. for watching.
