A few ago, Lyn noticed a knocking coming from the engine. inspection this turned out to be a bottom end failure caused by bores. This is a fairly 1ZZ-FE failure point, but is associated with pre-cat Since this car was equipped a TRD exhaust manifold from the it’s never even a pre-cat!

The decision was made to swap in a engine, but this was the ideal to upgrade. The 2ZZ-GE from the T-Sport / Lotus Elise was an choice and along with the six gearbox something we’re familiar with. Why Toyota to put their sportiest engine everything but their sports car one of life’s great mysteries!

Lyn something a little more for the VM180 though and opted for the 3.0 litre V6 engine from the Toyota Camry. We’ve installed both the 3SGTE and BEAMS into a mk3 chassis in the and felt that there be a good amount of commonality the two projects. Indeed, the 1M family of is more contemporary than the 3S so some elements of chassis should be easier.

We managed to source not one but two donor one of which had just 44,000 on the clock with 2 owners new and a full Toyota service The 1MZ-FE was removed from the and installed in the VM180 with speed. Mechanicals were up and the engine was running within a Once everyone was happy the install everything was measured and In order to keep chassis to a minimum we designed our own laser-cut to mate engine and chassis. Lyn had a factory looking install so than painting the engine it was back to it’s original

and before anyone the car had just been driven and so was and warm! The exhaust system is at the catalytic converter and the VM180 has through an MOT with the V6 engine From there it’s the factory fit TRD back box which almost silent at idle / low but really lets rip when you the loud pedal! Both the 1MZ-FE and support OBD-II which we able to take advantage of to the engine’s condition with an scanner. The mk3’s dashboard is expecting information from the sophisticated CANbus, which is a of serial communication not supported by the 1MZ-FE ECU. To get around (and supply some information to the dashboard) we’ve the original 1ZZ-FE ECU.

Lyn’s already planning modifications for the car — starting some new wheels — and to have a Link G3 LEM ECU installed in a of weeks. We’ve seen good gains with engine managment on the older engines and are optimistic about the
