Review: Toyota Urban

I drove Toyota’s new Urban through my local village in daylight — and not even a egg was thrown at it.

I parked it in a quiet for half a day and when I returned had been keyed into it and not a badly-spelt irate note my moral standing in relation to and polar bears had been under the windscreen wiper.

is odd because if I take my Range — very much the Cruiser’s country cousin, a Cruiser if you will — town it gets coated eggs and angry notes protesters.

I mean, I take the that it really makes no at all to keep a massive 4×4, of crossing the roughest terrain and a two-tonne horsebox, in an urban where the toughest obstacle likely to face is a steep outside the wine bar.

But I live in the country and I do need a big to pull a two-tonne horsebox rough terrain.

So what did my with the Urban Cruiser me?

Well, it’s rather to find a way in which it’s suited to urban cruising, to be

The low roofline and muscular haunches as appealing next to a village as they do under a graffiti-spattered arch if you ask me.

I noticed that from angles it looks slightly and ugly — whether you at it while standing under an oak next to a crumbling, thatched or from a busy skatepark to a 30-storey block of flats.

And I was by the combined speedo and rev counter in both town and country.

The are moulded into one dial in the of the dash. I really can’t see the wherever you drive it.

One thing aimed at the urban driver is the stop-start system.

The primary of this, as you’ve doubtless is to stop and start the engine.

It that when you pull up at, city traffic lights or to let a cow wander across the lane if a country dweller — the switches off automatically when the car and is put in neutral.

As soon as the driver then the clutch, the engine is restarted, to pull away again.

is achieved by having the starter permanently engaged — was a disastrous fault in the cars of my but now means the engine is started the your foot hits the pedal.

Pulling away I can’t help thinking the gearbox is a bit optimistic.

I felt at that the top range was rather those very highly-geared where the rider needs a tow a motorbike to get it to the point where he can turn the pedals.

Of course, take it out of the urban and give it a chance to stretch its properly and the sixth gear the fuel consumption figure from a predicted urban of 42.8pg to 57.7mpg for out-of-town

Although don’t go expecting it to throw off its city suit and into a proper red-blooded

It’ll take 12.5 to hit 60mph. Enough to humiliate a — but only just.

a confusing thing, the Urban It’s styled to look it might just be good You can even get a four-wheel-drive version a diesel engine.

But it’s unlikely ever to be to haul a horsebox or a trailer of And if you genuinely want a rugged, off-roader to cross the odd field in and with muddy, country a used Suzuki Jimny a very good case for

If you really are going to be confining driving to the urban environment, do you it to look like a rufty off-roader anyway?

And if not, a whole raft of compact cars that will do the job

In the end the Urban Cruiser’s problem is, that it’s not actually of a specialist after all.
