Carbs versus fuel

Originally published in Sports Illustrated magazine in June

During the runs with the car, we were looking for flat spots—the transition in fuel/air metering that are among the defects of the carb-fed, than injected, engine. were none. The beef in the FI permits you to take off from in top gear just by revving up to or so and letting the clutch out slowly. Our to 60 (actual) time in top gear was 13.8 seconds. Then we the engine down to its smooth-running in top gear, 14 mph, and accelerated both full and partial openings. There was no faltering, were no flat spots. was generated smoothly and at an increasing until about 2800 rpm the cam hit its stride and the car hunkered down and into the distance. Elapsed for 14 to 60 mph in high was 12.3 seconds, on the machine.

The same continuous flow of held good during cornering and braking. Under conditions with the dual-quad the contents of the carb float were slung away their intended orifices and the engine gasping for fuel. was no trace of this with the FI which feels as though it be driven upside down.

In all the recent prophecies concerning FI, been assured that economy will be improved. In tests, the FI version registered as as 15 percent better gas mileage—in of a lower gear ratio. of this gain is due to the FI job’s compression ratio. In spite of the compression our test car’s did not detonate even when heavily in top gear.

In the U.S. far interest is shown in cars’ performance than in their economy and we therefore normally our fuel consumption figures to obtained in overall running. But of the novelty of FI and because of the fuel claims made for it, we ran precise checks at steady speeds, a Donat Gauthier 1/10-gallon burette. The surprisingly good for so potent an engine are shown in the table. They suggest the economy that’s possible if you choose to drive one of these cars sedately. which is not the of use they’re

built for. More they indicate the improved economy that can be expected FI does become sufficiently to be fitted to normal touring

To get more expert opinion our own on Chev’s FI, we turned our test car to racing FI specialist Stuart asking that he drive it and frank comment. This was first behind-the-wheel encounter Chev FI and he gave the car a careful, workout. Then he said, good. All I can find to criticize is its behavior and its complexity.

As an addendum to the figures obtained, and to the comparison from our ’56 Corvette we might mention the net horsepower of the two 1957 cars tested—in words, the actual output at the with all accessory leads The injected engine delivers 240 bhp at rpm, while the dual-quad rig up 230 bhp at 6000. Last year’s engine was very modestly at 225 horses, so the improvement this is just what you’d from an added 18 cubic
