Toyota Corolla “halo” being considered

A new-generation Corolla hot-hatch is being to give the brand a “halo” for buyers to aspire to, according to the local executives.

Toyota product planning manager Dobson admitted that a certain mass-market appeal can be drawn upon for a hot version of a car as as the Corolla, despite the Toyota 86 offering enthusiast appeal in the

“We want exciting cars, and we the 86 delivers on that,” said of the brand’s popular two-door which starts from $29,990.

“[But] hot-hatches more of a halo status them. They allow a to build a car that’s aspirational.”

A version of the Corolla seems a logical step for a brand to boost its “ waku-doki ” excitement particularly given rival such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI and WRX have long been showroom traffic drivers for

“The rationale behind [a for a potential production Corolla is how many are we going to sell, and can we sell it for? Is there a size slice of the market a car like that]? It comes to market demand,” Dobson

“Our practice in the past has a little bit different,” he said of the the brand has often made or sporty looking” cars but real performance or enthusiast such as the brand’s popular models which were in the previous generation Corolla line-up (see image Those cars saw the adoption of a 1.8-litre engine with and 180Nm, a six-speed manual and stylised body kits larger alloy wheels.

If Toyota were to pursue a new Corolla, potential driveline could be problematic. A larger petrol engine may not cut it against competitors, and the Toyota 86’s naturally aspirated ‘boxer’ would likely be unsuitable for the It’s also unlikely the would fit a higher capacity V6, as was in the Japanese-market Toyota Blade G.

Toyota did, however, a high-tech, high-performance hybrid in the Yaris Hybrid-R concept  of – that car featured a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine producing teamed to a pair of electric at the rear which gave the car a 313kW total output.

Putting the hybrid tech that 1.6-litre turbo – which is yet to be offered on any Toyota model to date – would be for a truly fast Corolla and one that would out-power all of its rivals.
