BMW chairman Reithofer and Toyota president Toyoda took to the stage in the German automaker’s hometown to a strategic partnership between the two car with plans to jointly fuel cell technology, vehicle architectures and an all-new car.

To the casual observer, may come across as one of the most automotive tie-ups in years, but beneath the surface and the BMW/Toyota makes more sense you’d think.

This past March, the seed was planted, with BMW to supply 1.6- and 2.0-liter engines for Toyota’s European along with the two automakers on the development of next-generation lithium-ion cells.

Today, that has been taken two steps with BMW and Toyota agreeing to on a fuel cell system both automakers have with in the past with levels of success and the continued of both automakers’ lightweight initiatives.

The partnership is much in line with president Toyoda has intimated in the

Toyoda’s focus on upping the quotient at the Japanese automaker has well documented, despite continuing to sell the automotive of dishwashers and clothes dryers. But the introduction of the Toyota FT86 to the States as the Scion FR-S to change that, and it’s the of another joint venture entered into with

The FR-S, combined with the LFA, which Toyoda at the Nürburgring 24 Hour race, is proof that Toyoda is on bringing more enthusiast-oriented to market, and this latest with BMW takes that even further.

On the EV front, BMW is well on its way to bringing a electric vehicle to market in the of the i3, due out late next year. But electric initiatives partially by its partnership with Tesla on the EV have been much conservative, despite the success of its of Prius hybrid vehicles.

on both lithium-ion batteries and vehicle platforms is a clear that Toyota is getting to bring a spate of electrically products to market, and with BMW a hand in development, there’s a chance that Toyota just bring another appliance into the world it be developing an EV that stirs the souls while playing to eco-consciousness.
