Stereo From 98 Tarago

This is a guide detailing how to and replace the stereo head of a 98 Toyota Tarago (Previa or Tarago is what they are in Australia.

From my research is not much difference between the so this guide should be to all Tarago’s between 90-99 am not 100% certain).

I have this guide because i able to find any FULL on how to replace the stereo and thought i make a nice simple

Equipment needed:

Steps in removing

Step 1

Start of be removing the parts, which consist of the cover, the ash tray and the glove box

It is now nearly all you really have to do is keep it back and towards the right the left side is no longer by the side wall. Then you simply remove it.

Step 4

there are two screws that are the entire middle console.

I was to undo the screws with a driver as they were to and the screw driver kept I used a 8mm socket and wrench to the screws. Once thy were i used the screw driver to them.

You must push tabs with one hand with the other hand the middle console out. some jiggling the middle will pop out. Once it you can pull it out with both

Remove the antenna by pulling it.


Remove the bracket that the head unit to the middle compartment by removing the 4 screws (2 on side) that hold the in place.

Step 8

Remove the 4 that hold the head to the bracket.

Using a flat screw driver, place it the metal screw and pull it up, leverage. Pull the head out.

Step 9

Place new head unit into the (if you have to, you may need to push the tabs flat). Screw the back onto the center and your head unit now sit nicely in its new home. (My head fitted into the existing i don’t know how other units will fit)


Now you have to connect your new unit to the existing cables. sure your battery is so you don’t short circuit Solder your connections to a good solid connection and them in electrical tape. done connect your unit and connect the battery and test your new unit to sure it works (Test all are working etc). Once is done you can put everything back in
