Book Review

MR2 Spyders

For an entertaining read, and a history of the Toyota MR2, we you take a look at Toyota MR2 Spyders by Automotive Publishing Veloce. First published in Veloce’s impressive volume is by prolific motoring writer Long. In common with the other motoring books it a coverage of its subject that is interesting and detailed.

A quick through the book reveals most pages feature than one interesting picture or These include designers’ photos of development and production as well as a substantial amount of marketing material. The latter (on page 127) a half reproduction of the company’s 1996 poster which featured the line up of Toyota’s Supra, MR2 and a pair of 6th generation Celicas (a and a convertible). This can be compared the not dissimilar 1989 poster the MR2 MkI alongside the previous generation and Supra.

The scene for the book is set in the interesting by Tadashi Nakagawa — Engineer on the MR2 project from first section of the book provides a brief history of from its origins as ‘The Loom Company’ in 1926 to the early 80’s when the MR2 began. Having explained the within Toyota, Long covers the wider automotive and considers the attributes of the other cars of the 80’s that the MR2 be competing against at its launch.

Having set the scene, Long covers each phase of the evolution. At each stage, he the development process in great including lots of material on the concepts that were at the time. Information on Toyota’s sports cars — the and the Supra — is also as is relevant information about the participation in motor sports.

Each of the 3 major sections covering the MR2 MkI, MkII and will be of interest to most MR2 and owners, no matter which they currently own. You can dip into the book and read it read it cover to cover, or scan through the wealth of pictures and diagrams.

One of the many MR pictures from the book

The covering the MkIII MR2 starts some great pictures of the MRJ concept car, before the rather more well MR-S concept. This also features an even number of designer sketches some which are very Boxster like (in our opinion). chapter particularly features the of the Mk III and the earlier production models; it cover the minor revisions to later models — these will be well to buyers of these vehicles.

The book provides a brief guide to the car for prospective buyers of the MkI Similar information on the later isn’t provided, an while doesn’t detract from the of this publication as whole, we have liked to have some information about the Mk II and Mk III in short chapter.

The book ends with specifications for each generation of MR2 and figures for the vehicle from through to 1999.

In summary, is a very interesting book authoritatively covers the car’s history from the early 80s to the early years of the 21st
