Minicraft Toyota Sports Van (1971 Wagon) OOB

The box says it all… There’s a lot of writing on the box of the Toyota Van – but it’s really awsome in a way, just like the van

Sometimes, when cultures the result is something that is a of the best of both worlds. though, what comes out the end is more of a cultural train something so ridiculous that you turn away. This is about one of the latter examples.

The Toyota Sports van, in scale, is a testament to just how things can get. I mean, I weird, I LOVE this, but it is kind of disturbing at the same Imagine trying to apply the ideals of the Sundance Express to a Japanese van. How would it Well, it would look this kit. It would like it shrank in the wash. It look like the cultural to a “suitcase nuke”.  In short, it look like a cross a hippy and a weeble-wobble.

The Minicraft Van is based on a 1971 Toyota Super. The LiteAce has a proud in Japan, although its success in North America, hasn’t as great. (Remember those Toyota vans in the ‘80s? However, it does make that in California, where easiest to get things from that the LiteAce could, and have more of a following.

This LiteAce is no grocery though. This oddity does have all the great traditions jammed into one very compact, and subsequently package. This is what when California Vanner meets Japanese traffic and regulations. The excesses Vanning have always been nothing drives that more that this guy. It’s almost as if a joke that took too seriously!

The Box:

The first you see is the box, and I don’t know how it back in the day, but today it “RETRO-AWESOMENESS” as loud as anything ever seen. There’s a piece of art showing the van in all its customized blazing across the box. You even take in all of what’s on the first time you see it, because the and the van, are just so busy! are flames, and chrome, and mags, and it’s breath-stealing.

Because the kit is 1/20, it’s a big box. There’s lots of to show you the awesomeness that inside. There are cutaway to show you that your has a TV, CB aerial, extra bench California Mirrors and so much The font is simple; its job is to kick you in the and it does it. The van and the font are a powerful 1-2 you cannot recover, and you cannot getting the van. YOU WILL BUY VAN if you see the box. It is a guarantee.

Crammed vannin’ goodness, the LiteAce is a charicature of the entire van scene. I it proves good things in small packages!

This is the side of the box. Look at Nissan Vannette beside the I seriously need to collect all of things!

The Kit and Instructions:

Inside the things are less extreme, but no awesome. The van comes moulded in and there are some black some off-white pieces and of glass. There’s also a chrome rack, four rubber tires and a huge of decals. This kit was clearly for export; despite being in Japan, everything, including the is in English. However, there’s no the Japanese influence on the quality of Even after God-knows-how-many everything has been kept as as the day it was made because almost rack is separately packed. startling is the decal sheet. got newer kits whose are in worse shape. The decals are They are shrink wrapped in own bag, without tissue There’s no yellowing at all. a bloody miracle.  I can hardly to use them!

Here’s what’s in the box. It about the size of the typical van kits you normally see, but it’s 1/20! Check out decals at the top right; you’d guess they were but brand new!

Unfortunately, the of the kit is not as good as that of its packing. You can it’s an old kit. There are moulding issues around the windscreen, and heavy pour on the drip rails, too. The has swirls in it and some of the detail is There’s some flash on the parts, which means have to be stripped and sanded re-chroming. Thank goodness for

Because the kit is a curbsider, there’s not in the way of mechanical detail. Of course, you argue the same of the real whereas North American had monster V8s pushing them the Toyota LiteAce had an 1166cc Litre) grinding out 77 hp and 69 lb.ft of So, you’re not missing much by not an engine to build. There’s a transmission and differential, and the lower pan ides a notched steering like many Tamiya once you position the wheels, actually stay where you put

The chrome rack is extensive, but are large gates on all the pieces, so it is a case of having to cut, and rechrome. However, this help in the long run, I since then you can clean the up and ensure a better fit.

The are very clear, and are entirely There’s a lot of detail given on to do when, and both textual and representation of the steps. They like solid, easy-to-follow that are very clear on goes where. Since I’m almost none of us have any with 1971 LiteAces, is likely a good thing.

Here’s a shot of the instruction There’s no colour, but the instructions are and well-drawn. Lots of English too!

There’s a lot going on in little van. There’s a TV, a side-facing bench seat, a “desk” and overhead storage, rear hatch and side opening roof vent, porthole windows. It does with a surfboard, and there is a for it, to colour-key it to the van, thereby the Californication process. BOFFO,

This kit will not be an easy build. Its age and relative of advanced features, not to mention the amount of cleanup that to be required on the pieces will make it a longer-term project. I am very, very certain it ROCK THE WORLD when It cannot help but.

is not a kit for beginners. It’s not a kit for the faint of and it’s not a kit for the uninspired. This is a old rock that can be polished a real gem, though. If you see one, and you want something to your mind and clear out the of AMS (Advanced Modeller Syndrome – a of hyperdetailers coma wherein is overtaken by obsessive compulsive to pointless detail, thereby the fun of the hobby), this is the kit to do it.

If you ever seen one and don’t it, send it to me. I’ll give it a home.

Just like the Honda Today. the LiteAce is Here you can see the LiteAce in blue, a 1/20 Renault 16 and the body of a Trans Am. The entire van doesn’t make it to the front of the T/A’s fender!
