Our ‘new’ Cruiser

My affection for the 70 Series Cruiser has been well on ExPo, a vehicle I consider to be one of the overland platforms ever In late 2011, our team searching for a 70 series that serve as a personnel hauler and vehicle to augment our staff There are a few challenges in doing principally the rarity of these in the US.  The other challenge is the model line-up that 25+ years and dozens of models.  We are using two 78s for an around-the-world expedition, but I something slightly more for daily transport.  This led our to the first generation Prado Cruiser, which was based on the 70 series and HiLux platforms.  We an LJ78 SX, which is the long-wheelbase

It has a big, er, rear. We are going to do trail testing to see if a more rear bumper is needed. plastic corners are a concern.

1985-1996, Toyota Araco produced a lighter-duty version of the 70 and called it the Land Cruiser II, or Bundera, depending on the market.  the manufacturing location was the same as the 70 series trucks.  The Araco is renowned for quality and has produced the HD Cruisers for decades.  Araco is now by Toyota and is referred to as Toyota Body, located just of Toyota City in Japan.  70 series trucks and many of the 200 are built there.

There are a few key between the LJ78 Prado and HD 70 of the same era. Principally the deviates, with the LJ78 more with the HiLux a 76.  The transfer case is the same as the HD models, but the engine and is the same as a HiLux.  This has and liabilities, with the primary being drivability and economy.  It is not to achieve mid-20 mpg (9.5L/100k).  durability is rarely an issue in overland situations, these engines can be overworked and suffer cracking.  Head gasket and issues are unfortunately common many Land Cruiser plants, so a perfect cooling and attention given to exhaust gas is critical.  It is typical for owners to these engines after but a little research and preventative will prove sufficient.  Our has barely 100,000kms, so a long-life is Luxury Imports from has a solid set of recommendations to extend life.  If ours proves we will install a 3.0L Maintaining the cooling system and EGT seems to do the trick. We also from having a 5-speed which keeps ATF cooling out of the radiator. The axles are also a of HiLux and Land Cruiser.

The 2.5L Turbo Diesel was in the HiLux and Surf.  This will not take the abuse the 1HZ, etc. will. system performance and EGT monitoring is

Barely over 100,000 this engine is clean and maintained.

Beyond the drivetrain, the shares much of the frame and body with the HD variant 70 The front clip is shorter, and as a the front frame is slightly and shorter as well. I like the of the Prado sheet metal and hood length.  This change occurred in 1990 and is the major sheet metal from the HD 70 series models. Of interest to me was the suspension, which is coil and the precursor to the 80-series Having driving a 73 Land with all leaf-sprung suspension in the my spine liked the idea of a The rear suspension uses a trailing arm system with rod and anti-sway bar.  As a result, it has less articulation than our FZJ80 Land Cruiser.  overall suspension architecture closely resembles the G-Klass (but without the cross-axle locks) than any other Land Cruiser.  We have identified several modifications will greatly improve and road handling. As a factory these trucks had two-way valving, selected by a switch in the console; normal and sport  The Prado was available a factory option rear locking differential.  Ours with the limited slip.

While this truck is a 78, it shares few dimensions with the variant 78 Land Cruiser.  We a 1HZ 78 Troopie in the office and pulled it out to with the Prado.  From the hubs forward, the Prado is This makes sense the 6-cylinder engine of the Troopie, and a slight advantage to the Prado in angle. Aft of the front axle, the metal is nearly identical to the of the rear wheel arches.  the troopie is longer, reflecting the wheelbase VS. the Prado at 2730mm is identical to the 60 series).  The rear is a mirror copy between the and Prado.  Without question, the rear overhang is the primary clearance limitation.

Toyota Land Cruiser II

While the has a suspension lift and larger it clear how much taller the is overall.

Overall length is longer the new 78 Series.  No dimensions are shared the 1991 LJ78 and the 2010  Despite this, there are body shape and trim

On the inside, the Prado is a spruced-up HD 70 that classic metal and dash.  I am personally a fan of this construction and layout, which both comfortable and durable. The convenience items speak to the Prado customer with seats (with adjustable A/C, multi-speaker stereo etc.  Unfortunately, cruise is absent from all trim Our Prado is an SX model, which was of the line and fortunately free of the paint scheme. The seats are and durable, with this being equipped with the configuration. After the front two seats, a middle and rear row makes it possible to make cash as a bus driver.  The prior installed aftermarket rims 4) and slightly taller 235/85 R16 tires. Otherwise, this is bone stock.

The interior is a nice combination of 70 durability and 80 series livability

glove box and a grab handle. new vehicles provide a more interior.

Eight-passenger configuration

The is exited about the new project, we intend to take slow and purpose.  This truck is an excellent exploration platform, so will be limited and hopefully the overall usability and performance. for detailed editorial on each of the process.
