Toyota Kluger First

The Basics

The new Kluger is slightly (69mm longer and 15mm than the old model, and seven are now standard across the range. The remains unchanged though. models make up the new Kluger with GX, GXL and Grande available. for the entry level GX and mid grade GXL has dropped significantly. GX is down to $40,990, while GXL drops to $49,990 from $51,490. costs $63,990 – 2WD pricing is here. Opt for AWD and there’s a $4000 across the range. Keep in though that the old model’s leader was a five-seat vehicle, the new GX has seven seats standard.

parking sensors and a rear camera are importantly both across the range. The entry-evel GX gets cruise control, 18-inch alloy wheels (as as a full-size spare), 6.1-inch LCD display and Bluetooth phone with audio streaming. The topping Grande adds cruise control, auto-braking and blind spot monitoring as The Kluger hasn’t been by ANCAP yet, but Toyota is a five-star rating.

Some features – or rather the of them – left us scratching our though. Satellite navigation available at all on either the GX or the GXL – a decision is difficult to understand given the Kluger faces in the large SUV The Grande is also the only now that will get the clever tailgate design. Simply pop the on the old model and drop your bag in. One concern is the complete absence of parking sensors even on the Grande.

The Kluger has acres of – both seating and storage. The row seating folds flat the rear floor ensuring no of luggage space (529-litres) with five adults on Activate the third row seating and still enough room for some soft bags or cases. Fold both the and third rows down, and a cavernous 1171-litres available. in the third row hasn’t been either with roof air conditioning vents and cup holders

First Impressions

Despite its the Kluger doesn’t actually as big as it is, thanks to the swoopy styling. Get in the driver’s seat and there’s a lot to about new Kluger. The interior is a improved place to be compared to the old Fit and finish has never been an but the material and plastic choice has – not any more, though. The Kluger is comfortable with excellent all visibility.

Plenty of clever storage – like the enormous centre with a split shelf and twin sliding doors – really appeal to the family when space is at a premium. is excellent right through the third row and the back doors nice and wide, which getting in and out even easier.

We are with the lack of a diesel but Toyota’s research and sales show that Kluger don’t want an oiler – they like the idea of a petrol V6. Luckily, that’s what the 201kW/337Nm 3.5-litre is. At any speed and anywhere in the rev range, the is quiet, tractable and refined. by an excellent six-speed automatic the combination uses only litres/100km in GX and GXL 2WD guise. It’s not as as a diesel, but not bad for a seriously big (and at just over 2000kg)

We did some trundling around at launch as well as open road driving, and the Kluger does make sense you consider the kind of buyer who has opted for one. It’s kind of SUV that has really the final nail in the coffin for the sedan in Australia. Add Territory the mix and you can see why the family buyer loves style of vehicle.

Across all models, the suspension is comfortable being wallowy, the steering for the kind of driving Kluger face and the open road significantly better than you expect from a large We were impressed with not the refinement and insulation of the engine, but the lack of road noise. pot-holed, coarse chip roads couldn’t dent the of serenity in the cabin.

Interestingly, there isn’t a difference between the 2WD and AWD variants normal driving conditions. on a bit though out on the open road and the AWD is a more capable performer. town, you won’t need an AWD GX and GXL ride on 18-inch wheels, Grande gets 19-inch so there is a subtle firming of the on the top spec Grande model.

Do We Think?

The Kluger has historically one of Toyota’s most successful Importantly for the brand, original buyers were new to Toyota, the Japanese company didn’t other Toyota sales to demand for it. Now, though, will be potentially moving their second or even Kluger. There’s no doubt this new model is the best yet a wide range of factors.
