Grace, Beauty, Soul…Toyota?

Apr 13

I have always hated When I see them on the road, is an instant feeling of disgust wells up inside of me, which is combined with feelings of and anger at the people behind the Toyotas are sad, boring, and as Cream of Wheat.  But, was a time, albeit short when a Toyota had grace, and soul.

Surprising the world, in 1965 unveiled a car that rival the best from and Italy.  Named the 2000GT, it was a and graceful grand tourer remains the absolute pinnacle of automotive design.  Its design is a all its own.  Originally, Albrecht (real name Count Graf von Schlitz genannt von von Wrisburg), a Raymond Loewy teamed with Yutaka on an assignment for Yamaha.  They designed the Silvia 1600 unveiled in 1964, a car that was panned by the critics then Undaunted, the two went on to pen a new sports car at Nissan’s American market.  new car was to use a Yamaha designed 2.0 liter which Nissan hated, and so design was also shelved.

Enter Toyota.  They Yamaha to design a GT/sports car to its brand image.  Yamaha the Toyota people the shelved design as an example of what were capable of.  like the idea, hired and then had its own in house designer Nozaki create the design for the The original Goertz/Katayama design on to become Nissan/Datsun 240Z.

The 2000GT was to be a Jaguar E-Type only lighter and more With a chassis based on the Elan, the 2000GT is shorter, and much lower.  Measuring 45 inches tall (5 more a GT40), and weighing in at less 2500 pounds, the car was nimble but not quick.  With an aluminum the 2000GT was the first Japanese car to 4-wheel disk brakes and a slip differential.  The engine was a up 2.0 liter in-line six from the Crown sedan.  Creating it gave the car a top speed of 130mph, and the for the fastest car ever from Eventually, a nice set of Webber boosted the power to 200 horses.

It took Toyota and Yamaha two before the car rolled off the assembly and even then only 351 were ever made.  Of cars, 84 were made had drive, and only 62 were for the United States.  The price was in 1967, which was $1000 more than the Jaguar In order to create heritage for the Toyota started racing the In 1966, it came in third in the Grand Prix, and in 1967 won the Fuji 24-hour event.  Shelby even raced a of the cars in SCCA competition, others set FIA speed and endurance

Part of the cars cache came from film.  In a special convertible version of the car was in the James Bond 007 film Only Live Twice,” but this has a story attached.  The car was set to be the new Chevrolet Camaro, until it was it would look strange in a set in Japan.  When the 2000GT was it was discovered that Sean couldn’t fit in the low slung car.  The directors decided to have a version created, which its own set of problems.  First, the targa camera angles, and second, head stuck out an absurd above the window frame him look ridiculous.  Finally, the decided on a topless version was formed to look like an convertible (it had no real

roof).  This worked until the movie was shot.  co-star, Akiko Wakabayashi know how to drive, so the actual was done by stuntmen in wigs.  ups were done with the car and sometimes used another convertible.  In fact, some of the scenes actually show the car dashboard is from a different

All this still ended Toyota ceasing production of the car in It was too rare, too expensive, and unprofitable to Worse yet, Toyota realized the true potential of the It took Nissan/Datsun designers to that a vehicle like the could be created, only a much lower price.  type of Japanese sports car compete with the pony of America like the Mustang and and have great success in the Eventually, Nissan did just developing the 240Z, using the design that inspired the The Nissan Z cars hold the as the best selling sports car of all time.
