Toyota Echo

More that 14 grand still a decent car.

Many of us at 2002 Hogback prefer cars over big ones. For starters, small cars a light, agile feel you get in, say, a wallowing, oversized Second, lightness breeds and what easier way to make a car than to make it small? And most small cars less than big ones.

For the two decades, Toyota has covered the cheap end of the market with the but generally uninspiring Tercel. Its were a low price (the recent Tercel sedan just a bit more than an Korean sedan) and the promise of reliability and resale value (a Tercel brings about percent better resale than a Hyundai Accent or Kia In terms of performance and driving however, the Tercel was frequently by its Korean and American competition.

But with this new Echo Toyota plans to change all of The price, size, and weight in the entry-level ballpark, but its 1.5-liter boasts variable valve and cranks out 108 horsepower. That its power-to-weight ratio on a par with one step up, such as the Dodge/Plymouth or the Echo’s big brother, the Corolla. And the tall-boy styling is anything but

The Echo is certainly small on the At 163.2 inches long, 0.8 inch shorter than a Metro sedan and more 11 inches shorter than a Kia It’s also narrow only the slenderest of econoboxes are than the Echo’s 65.4-inch Yet standing 59.1 inches it towers over every car but VW’s fishbowl New Beetle, a you might easily surmise by at the tall greenhouse.

That height allowed to include an interior package not as tight as the Echo’s small might suggest. The front volume is 49 cubic feet, and in the the Echo offers 39 cubic of space. That puts it in its class and affords reasonable for four people, although adults are a definite crowd. The trunk holds 14 cubic of cargo, which equals or all but the hatchback econoboxes.

Now, about that price. The four-door base we tested here starts at But base model in this means base — power steering costs extra, and a digital clock is $70. Unfortunately, those are the only two stand-alone options. the $925 air conditioning? It comes with $1560 worth of stuff — power and steering, a CD/cassette deck, a defroster, and a 60/40 split-folding seat — so it’s to keep an Echo under Of course, that’s within a few dollars of a similarly priced Metro LSi or Daewoo Lanos and at a grand or so less than Neons and Honda Civics.

The Echo promises to be cheap to run as The EPA estimates fuel economy run between 34 and 41 miles per gallon. under the lead foots here, it averaged 35 mpg. The only requires regular fuel despite a lofty compression ratio. And Toyota have a great reputation for reliable cars.

The Echo’s 108-hp, 1.5-liter four-banger out many of its competitors, and the Echo’s performance is helped by its light The 2128-pound Echo hits 60 mph in 8.5 more than a second than our last Sephia and 0.2 ahead of a Dodge Neon. The was not, however, as quick as the in the quarter-mile run, but only by a — 16.7 seconds, 0.1 behind the Dodge. Top speed is to 112.

We won’t repeat the host of refinements we wrote about in our 1999 issue that for its overall hustle. All you need to is that the little engine to its 6500-rpm rev limiter eagerly and Unfortunately, you won’t know how the engine is spinning — a is not offered. We think a tach is a given this motor’s nature. At a minimum, Toyota have marked the speedometer shift points so the driver have at least minimal to indicate when it’s to shift.
