Fastback Friday: The Golden Age of

Over at Hatchtopia. I’ve a number of times on an idea I have – that there to be a far greater selection of hatchback than there are today.  I have any numerical evidence to that theory, but I know it to be It used to be that a car buyer walk into nearly any in the United States and find at one mainstream vehicle available in a configuration.  I’m not talking about sports coupes or niche but rather a 4- or 5- seat compact or car with 3- or 5- doors.

For instance, in various points in there were hatchback of the following:

Toyota Camry

Toyota Corona

Nissan Sentra

Mazda 626

Chevrolet Corsica

Chevrolet Cavalier

Dodge Shadow

Toyota Corona hatchback

Of course, is not an exhaustive list, and I’m certainly not that these cars any good or even interesting, that they existed.  And to out that they – or an equivalent do not.  Adding to the above were a number of sporty – the Celica, 240SX, Camaro, These cars are also now or soldier on as a trunk-ified version.

That list forms at the barest of reason for me to declare there was in fact a time hatchbacks may have not ruled the but perhaps at least roamed the in fairly significant numbers – a Age of Hatchbacks if you will.  The problem is to the period as the list above is not contemporaneous – those cars necessarily exist all at the same

There’s been much of the Malaise Era and the Turbo Era – those two about the same time… could the Golden Age be considered an A trip down memory to a 101-level geology class

According to the study of geochronology, the history is divided into a of different time scales – eons down to chrons.  and ages fall somewhere in – eras being defined as of millions of years and ages millions of years.

For car people, the Era seems like millions of long – for me, the Golden Age of Hatchbacks was but a memory.  So the Golden Age name

Now, if I could only a car that defined this period.  The Camry pictured at the top and went too quickly – arriving on shores in 1982 and gone by That seems to be right in the but certainly not long enough to an age.

Various K-cars and economy shitboxes do not define an age – they’ve existed since roamed the earth.  What I to find was an icon, something everyone recognized and for better or could identify as the bellwether of Golden Age.  While to work, I spotted that on the freeway.

Yep, the Ford Mustang this age.  Why?  out with the 1964 1/2 model, the was a notchback or fastback with a Then, in 1974 with the of the much-maligned Mustang II model, a was available – and that was the case 1993 when the Fox body was replaced by a trunk-equipped model.

the Golden Age of Hatchbacks can finally be as 1974-1993.  So what’s your Golden Age  hatchback?  mine:
