First Drive: 2014 Corolla Mark XI

Without it explicitly, Toyota readily that its last generation was Beige. It lacked excitement. more competitors in the compact segment (both in quantity and did Toyota succeed in making a fun car this time around? But the more important question for might be– Does the Corolla need to be a more fun car in order for it to be a success?

Hooniverse had the opportunity to a pre-production model last Make the jump to see our impressions.

This is my favorite aspect of the new It’s a marked improvement the last iteration, which like it had appendages stuck on, a la Mr. Head. The new look is smoother, and modern looking. It may not necessarily heads, but the little Toyota is falling in line with its

Interior:

Even in a model an all-black interior, the new Corolla did not claustrophobic. The thick C-pillars me from describing the interior as but visibility is not an issue. Visually and the interior bits seem But ultimately, it is still just an car.

Seats:

Apparently, the American car shopper cares about seats than any feature. The new Corolla’s front offer a surprising amount of and support, and even excels in the oft-neglected thoracic region. But a day of driving a gaggle of Corollas, my back started to get a wee bit sore.

In a nod to the ever-expanding Chinese market, loves rear legroom Audi A4L), the Corolla’s has been stretched 3.9 inches. The in rear legroom vis-a-vis the model is substantial. In the photo the front passenger seat was set for a three-incher. I’m 6 feet tall as you can see, my knees still had room.

Engine:

Two 1.8-liter engines are available, and this is it gets both interesting and interesting. The first unit is a which is good for 132 horsepower and mixed-driving fuel economy in the low 30s. I am left to wonder motive for keeping the old mill. Was it the Lack of factory capacity? Whatever the reason, it is disappointing.

The other engine, with (variable valve timing) adds eight horses and fuel economy. Mileage in driving goes up to the mid-30s. In driving, an LE Eco with 15 inch low resistance tires, and improved aero can obtain 42 mpg. isn’t exactly cutting rocket science. Valvematic may be new to the Corolla, but it has been available in vehicles abroad for several already.

Transmission:

Three are available– a continuously variable (“CVT”), a six-speed manual, and an four-speed auto. Truth be I prefer the four-speed auto. It is and predictable. In an attempt to make the CVT like a non-CVT, seven shift-points were programmed in. felt…artificial. With the 11th-generation retailing at essentially the same point as the outgoing model, components, such as CVTs, inevitable.

As a traditionalist, I feel that the the mode button, paddle etc. that Toyota is into its new car are a bit much for a compact sedan. But with every manufacturer accessorizing their with these gizmos, had no choice but to offer them.

First, I am disappointed that the good looking hatchback. is available abroad, is not for sale in the States. Smaller cars, and hatchbacks, are popular again and I Toyota is missing out on many sales.

Has Toyota created a more fun and ride? No. The exterior is definitely on the eye, and the interior has been But in terms of driving experience, the status quo, at best. In with the gimmicky CVT, it have even regressed. The are essentially the same old news, you get your jollies claiming you own a car gets 42 mpg. Coupled mediocre brakes and a too-vague gas there is no soul-stirring happening.

But it’s a reliable economy It will be purchased as a commuter car or as a car for the kid who is off to college. Most, if not all, Corolla buyers just reliability and strong resale Toyota has certainly succeeded in and building a solid economy The new skin and Entune infotainment may just be “fun” enough to the masses coming to the showroom If you want a fun-to-drive Toyota, buy a FR-S instead.
