The more things change, the they stay the same

At glance the new Corolla looks a lot the old Corolla, but a longer look lots of significant differences

Now in its iteration, the Toyota Corolla has an icon on American roads, a of simplicity and practicality. While compact sedans have to recreate themselves, the new Corolla in the footsteps of its predecessors. Did Toyota the right move by giving us of the same? Read on. Base $15,910, price as tested EPA fuel economy estimates city, 30-35 highway.

Glance: The same, and therefore

When it comes to the latest of compact cars, every is striving to be different, just everyone else. Look at the Honda Civic. the cubist Sentra. the flashy Ford or the racy Mitsubishi Lancer. It the only way to really be different is to the same — and that’s Toyota has done with the 2009 Corolla.

Take a brief glance at the old and the new Corolla and you’ll have a time telling them A longer comparison makes the clear — the new Corolla has an wedge motif with straighter creases and new headlights, and grille. But the basic shape the same — if you’ll the totally worn out car review it’s evolution, not revolution.

I don’t think that’s a bad thing. When it comes to car American buyers are a conservative You don’t buy a Corolla to impress neighbors. You buy a Corolla because frugal and sensible. You buy a Corolla it fits your needs, not you want to make a statement. the statement you’re trying to is that you’re the type of that doesn’t need to a statement. In that case, the makes exactly the statement you Er, don’t want.)

The new Corolla is in Standard, LE, XLE, S and XRS models. S and XRS get a body kit and red badges, but while the XRS up its looks with a bigger and sport-tuned suspension, the S is sporty in only, sharing its mechanicals other Corollas.

In the Driver’s Seat: Strong on and safety

Inside, the Corolla a simple, functional layout and materials. Air conditioning controls are of the three-dial variety, while my car’s stereo (link to photo) was integrated with the navigation system, which fairly straightforward operation via the touch screen. The nav system has a function that allows you to set alerts — very as are the dual gloveboxes .

The front were fairly comfortable, I could have done a bit more thigh support. 5’6, so I imagine that those shorter than me find the seat just taller folks might it a bit too small. But the seat’s height is a boon for all. One of my complaints the outgoing Corolla was that the position put me either too close to the or too far from the steering wheel. The new steering wheel tilts up-and-down) and telescopes (in-and-out), so problem has been solved.

In terms of safety, the Corolla’s some major improvements: brakes, front-seat-mounted torso and two-row side curtain are standard, and while electronic control (which Toyota VSC) is optional on all models the XRS, it’s a bargain at

The Corolla has a rather roomy seat. but the trunk is just OK at cubic feet. The back splits and folds — as it be in a compact sedan — but the doesn’t fold flat and the seatbelt can’t be detached, so always in the way.

On the Road: power, great economy, but to drive

All Corollas save the XRS are by a 132 horsepower 1.8 liter engine. and S models are available with a stick, but the LE and XLE (the latter the model I tested) come with a 4-speed automatic. I this powertrain to be a bit sluggish in the xA and Toyota Matrix hatchbacks, but I it was perfectly adequate for the Corolla Some may chide the old-tech for having only 4 speeds the Honda Civic uses a automatic while the Sentra and use a continuously-variable transmission — but the did its job beautifully, downshifting promptly more power was needed. As for economy, um, I sort of recorded the incorrectly, so I can’t give you an figure. (One of the problems of alone is that when you up, there’s no one to pin the blame on.) I to average a little over 30 a very impressive figure.

The Corolla rides comfortably, handling isn’t its strong the Corolla’s chassis is tuned for that’s predictable but not particularly My tester had the aforementioned optional stability control system, I found that when I hit wet on some of the About.com Top Secret Test Road’s twistier the system had trouble keeping the car in the right direction. That may had more to do with me pushing the car too than any problem with the electronics, but any driver could him- or herself in a similar if they have to make a swerve in rainy weather.

Journey’s End: Corolla’s a thing, even if it’s not my

What I like best the new Corolla is that it offers trim in a smaller, more package. Most compact are aimed at young (read: buyers, but the Corolla is geared people who are buying a small car that’s what they not because that’s all they can I would have liked to see carry this theme further by offering leather in the luxury-oriented XLE model, as Honda with the Civic EX-L and does with the Focus (Toyota does offer in the sporty Corolla XRS.)

Would I buy a Corolla? No — not it’s a bad car, but because just not my cup of tea. (I prefer the Sentra.) But I wouldn’t hesitate to the Corolla — it’s smartly trimmed, adequately and commendably fuel-efficient. The 2009 may not suit everyone’s tastes, but it is a car from stem to stern. Aaron Gold
