We’ve taken this highly popular advanced and souped it up — or more green-tuned it!

Add batteries and grid-charging, and you get a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). means no gas when you do your on local streets at 35mph. On the it runs just like any Prius, with the gasoline doing most of the work and the extra batteries kicking in to performance at ALL speeds.

We’re PRIUS+ happen. We now have working converted prototypes described in Fact Sheet shown in photos and here ):

The Calcars first proof-of-concept: mpg plus electricity, 10-mile range, now with temporary battery pack, soon to be by nickel metal-hydride batteries). Two prototypes: (100+ mpg plus 30-mile range, with batteries.

We believe that a small number of Priuses is the most cost-effective way to get people about PHEVs’ viability and — and support other development efforts.

With sales volumes now exceeding over 10,000 enthusiastic owners and many others are excited discussions online. can demonstrate driver interest in We are also working (with our integration partners) to offer conversions, first for Toyota probably followed by Ford and other forthcoming hybrids. Our is to encourage Toyota and other to supply the market for PHEVs.

At the CalCars-sponsored Plug-In Hybrid Conversion (don’t try to subscribe, as membership is you can see where we defined the project, the components and built our first (see links at top of page to Sheet and Photos). For initial we used PbA batteries; we’re now Ni-MH, and EDrive Systems is LiIon. If you’re interested in the history, go a year to get a flavor of how this all by reading PriusPlusTechnicalPosts (300K doc excerpting online postings May 2004 about enabling the EV-only mode that designed and about adding battery capacity, but not enabling of the larger battery pack).

Prius and Industry Developments: We been encouraged to see evidence of interest in building variants on the platform. Ford has licensed hybrid patents and Nissan use the Hybrid Synergy Drive To demonstrate the vehicle’s capabilities, has built three racer with Toyota Racing (link is the US branch, which builds and markets performance parts and, who knows, someday build PRIUS+), and has for testing a version that can act as an power generator. And California’s Coast Air Quality Management (SCAQMD) is spending $4M to convert Priuses to run as hydrogen (internal not fuel cell)-electric hybrids. See press release by engineering/integration and SCAQMD Response to Joseph former US Energy Department who supports non-hydrogen approaches, PHEVs.
