Which MPV should a couple Toyota Avanza or Chevrolet

Dear Mr. Botchi Santos:

day to you. My wife and I are planning to buy our family vehicle that can five passengers, but have space for another two (just in or for common family luggage for outings. We have the following

* budget (around P850,000);

* space;

* car-like driving

* automatic transmission (my wife AT because she’ll use it most of the in Metro Manila)

We’ve our eyes on two specific models: Avanza and Chevrolet Spin . I the latter for it is new and has good looks, but my wants the former. She’s got a considering after-sales service and availability. Her officemates tell her a Chevrolet vehicle’s value quickly. I have my own points my wife has also considered, but the is now a deadlock.

Now, since we both your articles (and we like them), and it seems advice matters much, we are sorry (in advance) for putting you in the hot for a tiebreaker vote. We want to a decision fast because the as you already know, is having an price promo until 19 only, and the Avanza, on the other has just had its price increased to (based on Toyota’s website).

We another question for you: Why is it both vehicles have the kind of engine (VVT-i, four-cylinder DOHC 16V with the same displacement) but produce torque and power? By comparing brochures, I’ve learned the Spin has the upper hand in department. Does it really especially when it comes to efficiency? And still with to fuel efficiency, based on claims, the Spin is better the Avanza.

I’m looking forward to advice, and thanks in advance. power to you and to Top Gear Philippines! God us all!

Hi, Danny. Thank you for e-mail.

Unfortunately, I have yet to the Chevrolet Spin . so I can’t comment on its performance. But I have to that I have been impressed with Chevrolet’s vehicle lineup, so the Spin carry the banner well for the brand.

Regarding the output it’s actually difficult to precisely why their engine vary despite having the displacement.

One possibility is the method of or rating used. Japanese, Italian and American auto standards use different equipment to the output of an engine, hence the can be slightly different from one There are also different of measurement ( PS or Pferdestärke  in German, translates to hp or horsepower for the unit of used in America, and kW or kilowatt metric unit of measurement by other countries). When or converting one unit of measurement to some things get lost in I guess.

Another possibility is fuel . Should you read the fine certain manufacturers specify a fuel quality/level to achieve the engine output. In the case of versus Toyota, perhaps tested its engines using a fuel, whereas Toyota a lower-quality fuel in the interest of the budgets of the typical Avanza buyers.

the truth is that all engines have varying power Typically, it should be plus or 1-2% of their advertised A manufacturer will test the randomly and see their actual outputs. The manufacturer will get the relevant range, and list the as producing a horsepower figure represents the mean figure or output in a batch of engines tested.

Other manufacturers (Porsche and as examples) list their outputs with the lowest, conservative reading they got in a run of a batch of engines.

Lastly, the matters. The saying, A candle burns twice as bright half as long, is very here. Both have four-cylinder engines, but one is working or more stressed to produce a output. This engine experience greater wear and compared to the other engine. All being equal, the harder-working will not last as long. But other factors come play: the quality of the harder-working cooling and lubrication system; the fuel and oil filtration systems; and the of the metals used to build the and its internals—plus the overall balance of the All these will help an engine’s longevity.

My apologies if this sounds but it is an interesting question we’ve asked quite often at  Top Gear Philippines . and I thought help shed some on the matter.

But for you, the bottom is this: Both you and the missus test-drive both cars . I tell you what to buy; I give the pros and the cons. I often tell people I would get if I were in their I do so carefully by listing my prerequisites and needs, which help or determine my choices. These same prerequisites and needs be irrelevant or lower down the for other people, so I always readers to test-drive the cars are looking at.

I hope this helps. your fellow readers help you come up with a by taking the poll below. luck and be safe.
