Curbside Classico: Toyota Is That? A RWD Compact Wagon/MPV? Who Have Thought?

December 19,

Once upon a time another country was exciting, an automotive point of view. The were replete with exotic cars, not likely to be seen in the U.S. nor in other countries–a situation unlikely today. Sure, has all manner of badge-engineered cars, but could hardly be considered despite their sometimes names. But within minutes of the Cancun airport I spotted a car on the just ahead and in the right that totally threw me: It was a tall wagon/MPV, but with a visible solid rear and center differential. What is ?

I could see its prominent Toyota but barely could make out the on the left side, which “Avanza”. Hmm….never heard of And that’s odd, as Toyota’s building MPV Verso versions of its FWD and Yaris for years (the Yaris variant is badged “). Avanza–I’d have to look it up we arrive at our rented beach in Tulum. No such luck: the housekeeper had neglected to pay the wireless service bill, we were back to the stone age for a week. nice, actually.

During a walk through Puebla, I ran into a couple Avenzas (Avenzae?) The differential on one is just barely visible. it occurred to me: Could this be, the old Honda and Toyota wagons of the four-wheel drive wagon with a rear axle driven by a 90 splitter from the front That’s something hard to in the 21st century.

When I came across one on the street, I got down on my (bare) and checked out its undersides: No front and a genuine norté-sud orientation of the train–just like a Corolla RWD back in the seventies.

The interior generic enough, and the transmission’s is no worse than that of the in a FWD car.

Although the drive tunnel is obscured from here, it’s tiny–in almost non-existent, thanks to the body. Makes you wonder if tall cars really FWD.

In back, the roomy area features a low, floor as well as a fold-up seat. I was rather intrigued, and to learn the Avanza’s story as it turns out, is rather and fascinating.

It all starts with the Toyota a rustic, low-cost pickup Toyota had designed specifically for and was built there starting in

The second generation was just a wee bit civilized.

By 1986, the third-generation sprouted a three-seat MPV version, in both short-and long-wheelbase

The fourth-generation Kijang was built 2004, when it was replaced by the Toyota Innova. The Avanza was to fill the role of the previous Kijang.

Strictly speaking, the is technically an Indonesia-built Daihatsu (Toyota owns 51 percent of although most are sold as Avanzas.Even though the job was farmed out to the engine and other main are all Toyota.

The Avanza is sold in several including the Philippines, Thailand, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Egypt and India. And Toyota’s JV FAW builds it in China. The compact-SUV shares the same 1.5-liter VVT and probably much of the basic The Avanza has been available 1.0-, 1.3- and 1.5-liter although only the 99-hp 1.5 1NZ is in Mexico.

To put it in perspective, the Avanza has a (2,655 mm) wheelbase and a 162.5″ mm) overall length–about six inches than a Mazda 5 MPV, and too. It was designed for the challenging of both crowded cities and rural roads, and is often as a taxi in the countries it’s in.

Toyota Mexico’s web site that last year, a new of Avanza arrived, wrapping the basic formula in updated (here’s a review ). The Avanza is the Toyota to be had in Mexico; its converted of $15,957 undercuts the Yaris by 10 percent. But then, cars are cheap in Mexico, with costing about the same or than in the U.S.

Traveling is encountering and learning about new things, and in that regard the modest as it may be, provided the automotive of the trip. I’m just not accustomed to into a totally unknown especially a Toyota. Kinda’ of me of being a kid again: what is ?
