Toyota Considers Building A-Bat Pickup, Shelves Duty Diesel for Tundra

By Haak

This past Toyota showed its A-BAT unibody pickup truck at the A-BAT is an acronym for Advanced Aero Truck, and the truck was in style to the Honda Ridgeline the only other unibody on the market), but is substantially smaller the Ridgeline.  The A-BAT would be by either a hybrid powertrain or a cylinder engine.

At the time the concept was shown, indicated that the truck did the potential of future production; on the fairly conservative styling a concept vehicle), that’s not Toyota, being its pesky self, however, has to ensure there is a viable business for the A-BAT before committing it to production.  Supplier sources said (and Toyota has that Toyota has asked for bids on components for the compact with the caveat that if prove too high, the product be shelved or scrapped.

The idea of a true compact – aside from the antediluvian Ranger, which received its complete overhaul for the 1993 year (and will be 18 old when it finally kicks the for the 2011 model year) – has a fair amount of appeal in fuel cost-conscious times.  The is currently the most fuel pickup on the market, but a four A-BAT could easily the Ranger’s numbers with a cylinder powertrain, thanks to its weight (unibody construction) and aerodynamics.  Were the A-BAT to add a powertrain (rumor is that if it it would lift the Camry 2.4 liter four cylinder and hardware), it would slay all comers in terms of fuel

At the other spectrum of Toyota news is that Toyota’s announced plans to introduce a duty diesel for the Tundra would compete directly the planned offerings by GM, Ford, and in the next few years) have shelved due to the Tundra’s drop in (down about 15% year to the high pump price of fuel in the US, and the high cost of emission compliance for a company always been very about its green credentials.  Of should the situation change (a of diesel pump prices and a of the full-size pickup truck specifically), Toyota could those plans quickly and get the V8 buyers hands.  For the time however, the company just

doesn’t expect that it sell enough Tundras that engine to make it a option.
