The Toyota 86 turns one

A couple of ago, we received another one of mysterious emails that I look forward to. The source was Motor Corporation Australia, so I straight in. Essentially we received an along with Australia’s top publications, to head down to for a day of fun and games with the now-one-year-old 86, as as meet and interview the Chief for this iconic car, Tada. Excitement!!

I flew in on afternoon, and had the pleasure of bumping some good friends Gwyn from Gripshiftslide. from The-Lowdown and Alborz CarAdvice arrived shortly me. After meeting the reps Toyota, we piled onto the bus and off to our hotel to have a couple of drinks. That night we lucky enough to be treated to an dinner at Eightysix restaurant ACTUAL NAME!!) with Definitely recommend the spot if ever in the Can.

The next morning dawned and freezing. We chowed down on brekky and piled into the bus By the time we arrived at the driver facility, Ryan and I had hatched a bit of a but more on that later. Our for the day were to be four-time Australian Champion Neal Bates for the course, and ADGP Champion Yates, so we were certainly in hands!

After a short and a few questions for Tada-san, we were up into groups for each motorkhana, skidpan and street We spent about an hour at station, thrashing the Toyota-supplied 86s They didn’t skip a picking up the beating we were all down. After all the hype I to be indifferent about the car, but admit that I couldn’t the smile off my face for the whole So much fun.

Ryan getting into serious business.

By the end of the day, I up representing Queensland and taking out the Motorkhana trophy, while picked up Most Improved spinning out on the street course I might also add that was pretty much no room for so no idea how this happened any damage. Nice!

We also had the to drive a factory-modified 86 around the circuit. The mods were light: harder damper lower, larger BBS wheels and Dunlop tyres. Being a I was sure I would like it than the standard car, but the opposite happened. I actually it LESS than the original car was more progressive and easier to in / drive near the limit. I feel like I need to to car enthusiasts, but the standard car was definitely the one I’d after driving them

I also had the privilege of being around the street-track by Neal It will suffice to say I thought I was to die several times not because I have faith in his driving, but I didn’t think the laws of allowed what happened. At one over a crest we were at a foot in the air with the whole in third, right before a right. Apologies to Neal for a bitch in the passenger seat.

Later on, we had the opportunity to ask Tada-san a few Between us journos we managed to a few juicy bits regarding future sports car direction. there will be 3 sports to round out the range, with the 86 the middle spot. The new Supra are currently in development and the intent them will be similar to the 86 – enjoyment as the focus, rather outright speed. This is much a polar opposite to the GT-R. One Supra concept

But what I’m really about is what the little one be! Perhaps a hatchback? Or something wild?

There remains a bright for the 86. A convertible is still in the plans, as are variants on the original.

Toyota has so far a couple of combinations: an 86 with more power, and one with less weight. The decision was that the lighter version was a lot fun to drive. And on that same a TRD concept has already been – with 227kg less bringing it under a tonne! “superleggera” version is the one I’d be REALLY to get my hands on. Maybe it’d something like this.

If made THAT in a convertible I’d be all over it like a rash.

Thanks go to Toyota for organising an experience, and letting us share it DS members!
