This 4Runner is a time dream made It all started in 2007 when we my beloved ’99 SR5 4Runner to get two new cars – the best of intentions.  While has always had a love for all things he began with building off trucks, then on to drifting. my passions were different, but in some paths.  I enjoy in beautiful places, travelling and a powerful looking SUV.  We a place where out interests – building an off road vehicle and going on adventures to those beautiful places.

Our first off experiences together were in a Ford Excursion Diesel an ICON 3’ Shackle Kit.  took us to places nearby the George Washington National and the Outer Banks.  While the was capable off road, it was meant to be our towing vehicle.  Well…we that in March, when in the Excursion and came home a 2013 SR5 White 4Runner While this truck sharp and is quite capable there was already a vision for it: to a technically proficient off road while maintaining on road We opted for the SR5 for the 3 rd row seat as well as the cost.  Follow us now as we embark on 1 of this journey.

The Excursion off to the left.

We started the suspension, tires and wheels.  We out to  ICON Vehicle Dynamics, Racing Development (TRD) and Tires.

Straight from the of ICON — The ICON Dynamics Stage 4 suspension for the 2010 + Toyota 4Runner is the overall handling bolt on system you can install. This can handle any terrain you throw at it and you unsurpassed ride quality on the and the performance offroad is incredible. The springs in this system the 4Runner 2″ of lift, and the rear lower links help the rear axle so that it can smoothly without bind. V.S. Series 2.5″ Rear Piggyback Shocks vast improvements compared to systems for the people that use vehicles in various on and offroad These shocks are tuned to give your Toyota a balanced and smooth ride along with extended shock cooling from the oil volume and piggyback reservoir. 4Runner 2.5″ rear have a built in bump to increase your compression in the final two inches of compression which prevents a harsh out sensation, and gives the vehicle a more controlled ride

Beginning the installation with the stock upper control

The installation was simple and straightforward iff (if and if for the non-nerds out there) you followed the I, being a bit over confident, quite a bit of extra work for by assuming that I, of course, all.  All of us here how to remove a bolt, take out the old and with the new.  ICON, in wisdom, took the typical parts out, new parts in” and a bit of engineering to construct a process works rather smoothly – followed. We commend them for effort because it is time  and does not directly revenue.  It is, however, indicative of commitment to excellence and thus extremely loyal and grateful  Furthermore, I’m not exaggerating when I that every bit of this kit is as a complement to the whole.  It is clean, and wildly impressive.  We cannot to introduce some abuse.

TRD forged wheels

Look at beauties.  TRD manufactures 17×8 forged wheels will bear the impact of T4Rs chosen path. wheels are lighter and stronger cast components as they are to intense heat and pressure transforms a solid chunk of material into what you see  The disadvantage is they are more expensive.  In the world of wheels, we believe that TRD has blended monetary expense ultimate strength to weight  Reduced unsprung weight performance in both handling and response. For the potential or current of 5th Generation 4Runners, know these wheels are made to with the stock wheel as well as OE hub bosses without the for a centering ring.

Nitto Trail Grappler the new TRD wheels waiting their during the installation.

The Nitto Grappler 295/70 R17 is Nitto’s blend of Terra Grappler comfort with the off-road characteristics of the Mud-Grappler.  The sidewall Trail Grappler has two sidewall designs that can be when mounting the wheels. 295 size tire is quite situated under the 5th generation  We initially opted for the 285/75 R17 but met with an unavailability issue and chose the larger 295. tire does scrub on the fender plastic (front) and the body mount.  We will be Part 1 with an article the well-known body mount  That aside, we have the initial on-road performance to be good and the sound levels are lower than many of the tires of similar tread  In fact, the combination of the ICON and Nitto Tire is thrilling; it has me the truck as if it were one of our performance

This is the factory front

The first thing that your eye on ICON’s front shock is the relative thickness of the portion of the housing as well as the aluminum upper mount. strength is accompanied by increased travel, adjustable ride (0-3”), a chrome silicon and a no-rust nitro-steel shaft. we run the list further?  This features flutter stack valving, ⅝” PTFE-lined spherical 250 psi nitrogen-charged internal reservoir, and you get a few more miles down the it is fully rebuildable.

In the background and with the name it represents is the CDC Valve.  An externally adjustable through 1 click increments, it oil flow into the reservoir 10 levels of compression damping.  feature provides for adaptation from soft to firm to match the terrain of choice.  We are to prove that offroading just ‘bout big ‘ol tires.”  we currently have a “big scrubbing problem.

What would this upper control arm look after going on an ICON Dynamics diet of billet and 17-4 heat treated (uniball and taper components)? move on and find out.

The upper control arms are an fit into the factory pivot with or without a suspension  We adjusted the arms in to get the camber the factory specs and caster within factory specs clearance).  We set the rear lower arm eccentric all the way out and the front eccentric to optimize the wheel position.

For the we elected to use the ICON 2.5” shocks with 5” piggyback for added heat dissipation. are very similar in construction to the coilover.  The lower point of the shock contains a spherical bearing to minimize Again, even the smallest is built to enhance the entire  Also seen here is the point of the billet lateral arm as as ICON’s 2” lift coil-springs.

is the factory lower link / arm.  Honestly, this OEM seems tough and rugged; is, until contrasted with of the ICON prescription.

This is not the relatively flimsy lower link.  This is Billet Aluminum Rear Arm.  It is surprisingly light.  It is with a load rating of 40,000lbs of pressure and recoverable rod ends and Johnny Joint  It is also easily adjustable ICON’s pinch housing above the logo and to the left) are also found on their Control Arms. It is armored. armored?  Yes, ICON placed a nylon rock along the leading edge of the  If you look closely, you can see along the of the arm.  It is important. Pinion and minimal deflection are imperative it comes to maintaining proper geometry while traversing chosen path.
