Toyotageek’s Garage Home

Prologue: Back in the fall of 2005 I was contacted by an individual asking for information about the Toyota Sports 800. According to this person, they were about to ‘inherited’ a Sports 800 from a neighbor, and they were contemplating on whether to restore the car or sell it. We emailed each other for several months and during that time, I told a friend about the car and I gave him the contact information for the would be Sports 800 ‘owner’. By the spring of 2006 my friend had learned of the Sports 800’s location and had spoken with the real owner of the car (we never did find out who our original contact was, or what right they had to the car, if any). In ...

1957 BMW 507 Roadster

Comments s/n 700038, Engine No. 40037 Light Metallic Blue with Grey Leather In the 1950`s, BMW was still struggling to recover from the war years and seeking to re-establish itself as a builder of great automobiles. The BMW 507 was the brainchild of BMW importer Max Hoffman, who in 1954 persuaded the BMW management to produce a roadster version of the BMW 502 that could compete with Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz sports cars. Hoffman pushed for designer Count Albrecht von Goertz. Von Goertz, a German born American resident industrial designer, was also responsible for designing Studebakers, BMW`s 503, the Datsun 240Z, the prototype for the Toyota 2000GT coupe, and had a hand in the design of the ...

Toyota kills-off the Tacoma X-Runner — Blog.AutoShopper.com

Toyota kills-off the Tacoma X-Runner America consumes more pickup trucks per year than any nation on earth. We’re a land of can-doer’s, and we like vehicles that can help us get the job done. The big, brawny Ford F-150 has been America’s best-selling vehicle for decades, but there are some people that don’t need quite as much ‘truck’ to get the job done. For them, Toyota created the right-size Tacoma, and it’s been leading the midsize pickup category for quite some time. From simple fleet trucks to luxuriously appointed off-roaders, buyers can choose from many versions of Toyota’s little truck. Unfortunately though, Toyota has just announced ...

Toyota — history of the car company

Toyota history: corporate and automotive Toyota corporate history The official Toyota history is, like that of most companies, fairly glossy and bare-bones. An article by Konrad Schreier, printed in the Complete Book of Toyota (a bit of a misnomer since the book is mainly a bunch of reprints of gushing, “no criticism allowed” car reviews), brings up a large number of missing pieces — as does The Standard Catalog of Imported Cars. Why Toyota and not Toyoda? According to a much-quoted article in Wikipedia, the spelling change was made to make it easier to pronounce, symbolize a separation from the founder’s home life, and, possibly most importantly, because Toyota, ...

Curbside Classic: 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air Sport Sedan – Why Can’t…

Curbside Classic: 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air Sport Sedan – Why Can’t I Rent THAT at Hertz? October 18, 2012 There are times when cars beg to be Curbside Classics. And this afternoon we have a serendipitous 55-year flashback, to a time when Chevrolet was the favored car for Hertz advertising. If Chevrolet wasn’t going to be the #1 car people bought in 1957, they were happy to be the #1 car they borrowed that year. But for a few new features, underneath our desired rental was the same  Motoramic  Chevrolet introduced in the fall of 1954. It was far from the staid, sedate bargain cruiser into which Chevrolet had morphed during the depression years. In actuality, it became the essential ...
