Getting Around
Bali is made up of three main roads that circumnavigate the island and hundreds of smaller roads that traverse the countryside. It takes approximately 3 hours to travel the length and breadth of Bali. Road conditions on the main roads are generally good but can be heavily populated with slow traveling trucks. The conditions of the minor roads are generally determined by the weather. During the rainy season, road conditions fall foul of torrential rain and heavy traffic leaves the roads covered in potholes and debris.
Although there is a good public transport system here, journeys tend to be very long and don’t take in smaller destinations.

Everybody’s favourite holiday place. What more can I say?
Another Toyota Kijang car with driver and this time we invited another couple, Terry and Sally, from our dinner table to join us.
No traffic grid-lock, air conditioned comfort and The Westin within the Nusa Dua locale was the unanimous choice should we venture back next year. Enjoy the pictures.
Note: The ship’s tendering ferry service was an endurance test, akin to unloading a sheep ship. But fortunately there was no-one from animal welfare to video the abuses for next Monday night’s 4 Corners program

Cheating on the Buses
By: Kenneth Yeung
Transjakarta Bus
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Transjakarta busway: a public transport system beset by financial scams. Even before the project commenced, funds allocated for the busway were diverted to buy marked up equipment for the City Transportation Agency. This included laptops falsely priced at Rp.50 million each and walkie-talkies at Rp.8 million per unit.
Fast-forward in the slow lane to 2014 and little has changed. Buses sold for the equivalent of Rp.1 billion ($86,300) each in China were being purchased for Jakarta’s busway at the marked up price of Rp.3 billion. Some of the buses from Chinese firm Ankai broke down within ...

Toyota Kijang, Indonesia’s unofficial national car
JAKARTA (Reuters Life!) — India has its legendary Ambassador. Europe’s cult car is the Beetle. And in Indonesia? You have the sturdy old warhorse, the Kijang.
Toyota’s Kijang may not have the romance of the Ambassador or the cuteness of the Beetle, but the huge multi-purpose vehicle has been the heartbeat of Indonesia for decades.
The Kijang, which means deer in Bahasa Indonesia, was first launched in Indonesia in 1977, as a cheap — and not so attractive — pick-up truck that could easily navigate the country’s bumpy and often packed roads.
Over the years, it’s grown into a sleeker vehicle with ...

Indonesians Cope With Infuriating Traffic and Inefficient Public Transit
Rony Zakaria for the International Herald Tribune
Traffic last week in Jakarta, the capital, where workers allowed to leave early during Ramadan, the Muslim holy month, have only magnified the congestion.
Her journey started with an hourlong ride on a standing-room-only public bus, followed by 25 minutes in a minivan, and finally a five-minute walk to her house in the far southern confines of this Indonesian capital.
Once there, Ms. Roma, 33, a Muslim who works as a secretary at a financial services company, planned to buka puasa — break her fast in observance of the holy month of Ramadan. Getting to work the next ...
