U.S. is cast as villain in Japan — Los Angeles Times

Some believe Toyota is being treated unfairly by regulators and lawmakers. Reporting from Seoul and Los Angeles — A series of aggressive federal probes into the recalls of Toyota autos are looking at whether the automaker has been less than forthcoming about the safety defects in some of its vehicles. But in Japan many believe it’s the U.S. government that has something to hide. Congressional hearings on the recalls, they say, are part of conspiracy to help prop up Toyota’s largest American rival, General Motors Co. which the government bailed out of bankruptcy last year, becoming the majority shareholder. Toyota Warns of First Profit Drop in Nine Years | Companies & Executives…

Toyota Warns of First Profit Drop in Nine Years Toyota Motor Corp. warned May 8 it expects the first drop in annual profits in nine years because of a weak U.S. economy, a stronger yen and soaring raw material costs. The gloomy forecast came as Japan’s largest automaker reported another record performance for the financial year to March on the back of brisk demand in fast-growing emerging economies. Auto insiders blame Toyota’s problems on a rush to global growth

Auto insiders blame Toyota’s problems on a rush to global growth That’s the story Japanese automobile analysts are offering to explain the faulty gas pedals that led to the automaker’s unprecedented decision to shut down five North American assembly plants and suspend sales of eight of its most popular vehicles. On Thursday, the company said its recall of millions of U.S. vehicles due to issues with faulty gas pedals was being extended to cover vehicles in Europe and China. Our president, Akio Toyoda, has said that expansion may have occurred to the extent where it is difficult for us to keep an eye on the ball, said Paul ...
